Do you know how to cut down grocery spending while maintaining the quality of goods purchased?
Grocery shopping can drain a household’s finances. In the UAE, for example, groceries account for 14% of the region’s disposable income, which is significantly high (GO-Globe). This, alongside the worrying rise in global food prices and the over dependency on imports, is sure to be a cause for concern. An astounding 80% of the food within the UAE is imported.
One area that most households tend to overlook is food waste, which many do not take into account.
According to UNEP’s Food Waste Index Report fetched in 2019, 931 million tonnes of food are wasted globally, with an astonishing 61% coming from households (UNEP). Fruits and vegetables are trademarked as the most disposed food items, and surpass their expiration date rapidly.
Food waste has one alarming byproduct – financial mismanagement.
The purchasing of groceries leads to consistent wastage of finances due to spoilage.
• Fuels food-related expenditures without actually consuming food
• Looks unpleasant and evokes strong feelings once passed its expiration date
• Expired by residing in the fridge a little too long
• Preferring once connective tissue turns overripe
This purchase is disastrous in multiple ways, which makes tackling roots a challenging endeavor. For a family with kids, the average monthly spending on fresh fruit can reach AED 400. With the average household waste rates hovering around 30%, this means 120 AED worth of fresh fruit is wasted every month, which is nearly 1500 AED in a year.
Freeze-dried fruits are the answer.
No rot.
No need for a refrigerator.
